How to create a podcast using blogger

MatteoPenzo/blog has now become Yellow Line, pls update your bookmarks

I've just managed to create my first Podcast. A podcast can be described as an asyncronous on demand radio show delivered through the Internet (you can probably find a better description of Podcast on Wikipedia).

I'm a straightforward guy: I'd like podcasting due to the small amount of time it's requested to post, and I definitely don't want to loose time publishing it. That's why I wasn't satisfied with the various tutorials for podcasting with Blogger I found when googling, and that's why I've decided to create this post: podcasting with Blogger made simple (and immediate!).

The first thing you have to do is subscribe to Blogger (if you aren't already, obviously) and start a new blog. Be sure to have your Atom feed published.

And now a little bit of magic touch. Just point your browser to the wonderful Feedburner service, get a free subscription, and have it pointing to your Blogger feed (that should have an URL similar to www.yoursite.com/blog/atom.xml), you'll be provided with a new URL similar to mine (http://feeds.feedburner.com/Matteopenzo). Now publish it on your blog and have it spreaded. We're almost done.

Back to Feedburner: go and edit your burned feed; you'll be presented with a series of cool options, you're looking for the "Essential Feed Services" box, where you have to enable your Smartcast option.

Smartcast makes podcasting easy in feeds that normally cannot support it. Link to MP3s, videos, images, and other digital media in your site content and SmartCast creates enclosures for them automatically. SmartCast ensures your feed delivers media that current podcast software, such as iTunes and IPodderX, can use.

Smartcast is a really cool tool: it automatically searches your multimedial content (e.g. the MP3 files you use for your podcasting) and creates an RSS 2.0 enclosure element ready for the Podcasting software.

You now have two options to have your Blogger account to manage your podcast

  1. Place the MP3 URL in the link field
  2. Just link the MP3 file from within your post

Whatever you'll choose you have just created your first podcast managed by Blogger!
